St. Thomas, Not Just Where I Work

If you’ve been reading my blog, you know that I work at St. John Dental on St. John but also at the St. Thomas East End Community Health Center in Tutu Park Mall on St. Thomas.

St. Thomas Community Health Center is a federally funded center serving low income families with quality health care. It is conveniently located inside a shopping mall so that the islands bus service and dollar safaris can bring people to the Center. Dental used to be housed in just a two room little space off of medical. Cramped is putting it mildly when describing this area. Two people could not even pass each other in the small hallway leading to the rooms! But, thankfully, funding came through for a new facility to be housed in its own separate area in the mall and we have a true dental clinic! With its own waiting room, a reception area, dental lab for asepsis/sterilization of dental instruments, five treatment rooms and one private office for the dentist and dental manager. What a difference!!!👏👏

They hired a second dentist, a full- time hygienist, several assistants and three front desk receptionists to handle the large influx of patients waiting to be helped. Finally, dental didn’t have to keep putting people on a waiting list for treatment 🙌🏽

Okay, enough about work. Let’s talk about fun on St. Thomas 💃🎶

St. Thomas is a much larger island than St. John and so offers more to do. One thing I really liked to do was go to the Pistarckle Theatre housed on the grounds of Tillett Garden Center for the Arts, an artistic marketplace for local Caribbean arts and crafts. The theater, founded in 1991, has five full-length plays or musicals each year performed by local talented actors and is the only professional theater on island. It is 116 seat theater with air conditioning and will hold summer drama camp for kids and host film series of lesser known art films of diverse topics.

Outdoor restaurant in Tillett Garden

You can enjoy a delicious meal at the outdoor restaurant before attending the play or musical at the theater.

Friends and I are going to see ‘Play It Again, Sam’ after our meal

Plays and musicals I have seen: ‘Play It Again, Sam’, ‘Working’, ‘Evita’, ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ , ‘Dream Girls’ and a locally written play ‘Catch and Keep’ . Unfortunately, I was not on island to see my daughter, Michelle, perform in ‘Rock of Ages’🙁 Darn it!

Other fun times I’ve had on St. Thomas:

Free drinks for ladies at Happy Hour
At Duffy’s for music & dancing 💃
Winning bingo at Caribbean Saloon

Other things to do on St. Thomas that I haven’t done yet:

Tree Limin’ Extreme Zipline😅
Parasailing
Pirates Treasure Museum
Coral World

And lastly, something I did not participate in but witnessed a friend camouflaging himself for……. paintball🤪

Ha! Ha! Ha!

Good times, good times! Worth the ferry ride over! Lots of fun and laughter shared with family and friends!

Hi, I’m Rose. I am a single dental hygienist with grown children who lives/works part time in the States and part time on St. John, US Virgin Islands. I also love to travel. I would have stories about things that would happen either on St John or the various places I’ve visited. Many of my stories would be about unusual things that people in the states are not used to and some where a picture painted a thousand words. So when my friends encouraged me to write a blog, I was hesitant. Would anyone read it? The advice given: those who care will read it and those who do not care, don’t worry about. Here’s my blog for those who care to know me a little better and sometimes get a good laugh or just want to see what island life is all about.
