Back on St. John🌴

After my mission trip to Haiti (and two more mission trips in 2012, 2013), and let’s just say, the year of 2014 was one of the worst years ever for me …..I had to make some life changes.

At first, my plan was to take as many trips to St. John as possible in the winter time since I had lots of PTO working at Healthlinc for over 10 years. But after a trip in January and March 2015 and then having my June Healthlinc conference about “living my dash” (see first blog), I took the steps to apply for my VI dental hygiene license. I rented my home in Indiana for 6 months then took a leap of faith that everything would work out once I arrived on St John in December.

Cortney and Molly

What made the move even easier was having daughters , Molly and Cortney on island! Molly was already living on island with her sister, Michelle, taking a break from her studies at IUPUI and Cortney came along with me in December for a visit. Poor Michelle!! We all descended upon her😂

So in exchange for letting us stay with her, we helped her with her sandal business startup vending sandals. She was still co-managing Waterfront Bistro restaurant and teaching Zumba and yoga classes at the Caneel resort. My girl is one industrious, energetic person! But the truth is most people who live on island have 2 to 3 jobs to afford to live there. It’s the price you pay to live in paradise!

I hounded down my VI dental hygiene license and after 100 phone calls and emails, I finally got it and started working a couple of days at St. John Dental since he already had a dental hygienist who was working the other four days.

So when we were not working, we were at the beach! We all love to swim and snorkel and meet new tourists/residents/locals sharing our stories how we came to live on St. John.

Our favorite beach, Solomon

Evenings are just as lively. We attended an art gallery located in Frank Bay. Coconut Coast Gallery is owned by a local artist, Elaine Estern, which displays her artwork inspired by the island. On Wednesday evenings, she has an open house with an amazing spread of delightful snacks, champagne and painkillers! The sunset view there is spectacular and she also hires two flute players for even greater ambience.

I really am in heaven!

Hi, I’m Rose. I am a single dental hygienist with grown children who lives/works part time in the States and part time on St. John, US Virgin Islands. I also love to travel. I would have stories about things that would happen either on St John or the various places I’ve visited. Many of my stories would be about unusual things that people in the states are not used to and some where a picture painted a thousand words. So when my friends encouraged me to write a blog, I was hesitant. Would anyone read it? The advice given: those who care will read it and those who do not care, don’t worry about. Here’s my blog for those who care to know me a little better and sometimes get a good laugh or just want to see what island life is all about.
